The 2014 Fast ForWord at Home Scholarship program, which begins October 17th, will give parents of struggling readers nationwide an opportunity to help their children take a giant leap forward in reading proficiency. The Fast ForWord at Home Scholarship, valued at $1,400, includes a four month series of daily online exercises scientifically designed and proven to advance critical language and reading skills.

Fast ForWord is a language, literacy and cognitive skill intervention that uses the principles of neuroplasticity—the ability of the brain to rewire and improve—to remediate the underlying causes of language and reading difficulties. It develops the foundational cognitive and literacy skills that enhance learning, including phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, decoding, working memory, attention, processing, syntax, grammar and other skills necessary to learn to read or become a better reader. Fast ForWord has been successful in helping children who have difficulty reading, including those with learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, auditory processing disorders (APD), dyslexia and ADD/ADHD.

"Parents of struggling readers often experience confusion about what to do and where to turn for help. It is deeply frustrating to watch a child struggle over and over again with the same basic reading hurdles while trying to keep pace with today's classroom lessons. Fast ForWord is the only program designed to improve a struggling learner’s language processing speed, while building increased accuracy, efficiency and memory," said Dr. Martha Burns, a noted neuroscientist and practicing speech and language pathologist.

The Fast ForWord at Home Scholarship offers support from a trained remote consultant who can help parents understand the exercises and coach the family in ways to make maximum progress while on the program.

The Scholarship recipient will participate in the program from the comfort and convenience of their home. Online access to Fast ForWord makes the program easy to implement around a family's busy schedule. A computer with a reliable internet connection and headphones are required, along with a parental commitment to support the recipient for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, for 4 months.

Scholarship applications will be accepted Friday, October 17th through Thursday, November 20th. Parents of the scholarship recipient will be contacted by Friday, December 5th. Students of diverse ages and abilities can benefit from the program, including K-6 readers, English language learners, and struggling readers in middle and high school. Parents may apply by completing an online application here. To apply, parents provide relevant contact information and are invited to briefly describe educational goals for their child, along with specific challenges, and how they view their role as a parent in supporting their child's education
